  4.     CROWNED. Roger Maris, Yankee slugger and rifle-armed right
  5. fielder; as major-league baseball's undisputed single-season
  6. home-run king. In 1961 Maris hit 61 homers, surpassing Babe
  7. Ruth's 1927 mark of 60. But Ford Frick, then commissioner of
  8. baseball, ruled that Maris had technically not broken Ruth's
  9. record, since the Babe reached his total during the old 154-game
  10. season while Maris did not hit his 61st until the final day of
  11. the modern 162-game season. Thus Maris' achievement went into
  12. the books with a special annotation. Last week, following a vote
  13. by major-league baseball's committee for statistical accuracy,
  14. Maris, who died in 1985 at 51, gained undisputed recognition.
